Things to do in Catacombs of Rome
Discover Rome's past as you explore the underground catacombs beneath this modern city. The Eternal City is home to impressive bone collections - but you'll only notice them once you head underground.
Generally carved out of tufa, the Catacombs of Rome were burial areas for both the Jewish and Christian religions. They are located outside the city center and over 90 miles including more than 40 catacombs. From the Vatican to the Via Flaminia, underground Rome is an area rich in history and mystery.
Don't miss the Via Appia Antica where you can observe the unique honeycomb burial chambers formerly filled with bones. Rome's biggest catacombs are found at St. Callixtus, with a network extending for 11 miles underground.
Another must-see site is the Capuchin Crypt - home to the bones of over 4,000 monks shaped into strange, yet impressive patterns. Although these sites can be a bit spooky for younger children, older kids and grown-ups will certainly enjoy a walk through Rome's famous and lesser-well-known catacombs of Rome.
