Things to do in Marienplatz

4.7/5 (11)

The Marienplatz (St. Mary's Square) is the central square in the city center of Munich and the beginning of the pedestrian zone. The square is surrounded by a multitude of historical buildings, including the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) in the northern part, Old Town Hall in the eastern part, and the Mariensäule in the middle of the square.

The Mariensäule, a Marian column after which the square was named, is topped by a golden statue of the Virgin Mary. Dating back to 1638, this column stands over 35 feet and was put up to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation after the Thirty Years War.

Since Henry the Lion founded Munich in 1158, the Marienplatz has been the center and heart of the city. Duing the Middle Ages, the square was actually called Markth (market) because markets and tournaments were held here. It is here where the two main streets intersect and has been decisive for the city's development and life throughout the centuries. There are many restaurants, beer gardens and attractions along these streets, making it Munich's urban center.

Many tours start in the famous square due to its central location and the square's historical significance. Be sure to experience the Rathaus-Glockenspiel show at the New Town Hall. Every day at 11:00 AM, 12PM and 5:00 PM in the summer, tourists look up at the tower to watch the clock's figurines reenact two stories from the 16th century.

Visit the square in December to see Munich's oldest Christmas market (Christkindlmarket). Dating back to 1642, the market opens up exactly three weeks before Christmas and offers handmade gifts, treats, and drinks only found during this time of the year. Listen to the free concerts that come from the balcony of the New Town Hall to put you in the jolly spirit!

Marienplatz can be reached by foot or accessed with the U-Bahn and S-Bahn, taking the train to the Munich Marienplatz station.
