Holyrood Park is just a few minutes’ walk from the city’s old town, yet a world away from the hustle and bustle. Nearby are the ruins of Holyrood Abbey and the famous Palace of Holyroodhouse – meaning you can tick off a few sights in one go. The park, which dates back around 350 million years, is a popular meeting point for locals and a great place for a relaxing stroll. In fact, there are a few different walking routes and peaks to climb, like the iconic Arthur’s Seat – an extinct volcano, older than the city itself. According to local folklore, it was the site of King Arthur’s palace and the scene of many battles. On your way back down, you can visit St. Anthony’s Chapel, a 14th-century hermit’s cell used by pilgrims for many centuries.

Birdwatching is popular at Duddingston Loch, which lies at the south of the park. As Edinburgh’s only freshwater lake, it’s home to many different bird species. And nature enthusiasts will be in their element at the park, where over 350 plant species have been recorded.
