Things to do in Cutty Sark
Jump on board the world's only surviving British clipper ship and experience a taste of what life was like on the open seas for a sailor back in the late 1800s. Discover 150 years of history in this interactive museum ship through the tales of Cutty Sark’s famous voyages.
Built in Scotland in 1869 for the Jock Willis Shipping Line, the Cutty Sark was one of the last clippers to be built and one of the fastest of her time. Originally built to transport tea from China to Britain, the Cutty Sark spent less than ten years on the tea trade. Steamships took over the tea run with the opening of the Suez Canal, which meant that steamships now enjoyed a much shorter route to China, and it became too competitive for Clippers to continue transporting tea.
The Cutty Sark was re-purposed and in 1883 her new primary cargo was wool from Australia. This is where she broke the record time to Britain and became the fastest ship on the wool trade for ten years. In 1895 she was sold to a Portuguese company and renamed Ferreira where she traded various cargo across the world. In 1922, she was sold to a retired British merchant navy captain and brought back to England to be used as a cadet training ship. In 1954 she was transferred to a permanent dry dock at Greenwich and was restored before opening for public display.
In the heart of London, the Cutty Sark enlivens the senses with interactive games and exhibits - experience the sights and sounds of this record-breaking ship and get close enough to touch the gleaming copper hull! Immerse yourself in the experience of life on-board and learn about how the crewmen survived high seas, storms and conflict. Admire the fantastic views of London from the deck or visit the Cutty Sark café, serving classic British afternoon tea. There is also a souvenir shop on site where you can buy tea, books and other keepsakes to take home to your loved ones.
The Cutty Sark is in Greenwich in South London and is easily accessible by public transport. The closest stop is The Cutty Sark Station on the Docklands Light Railway stop which has connections to central London and the London Underground.
