Avignon is bursting with the fantastic story of the glory days when the Vatican moved to Avignon in the 14th century, transforming this small town into the beauty it is today: see trances of this fascinating past reflected in monuments and buildings such as the largest surviving Gothic palace in Europe, the Palace of the Popes. You'll then move to Rocher des Doms, a lovely park overlooking the Rhône river, walk along the ramparts of the city and finally reach the famous Pont de Avignon.
The tour also includes the visit to the town on the other side of the river, Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the village well known for its world-famous wines. Don't miss a tasting of AOC (Appellation d’Origine Controlée) red wines produced here, which are the pinnacle of viticulture heritage in the southern Rhône Valley. See the ruins of Pope John XXII’s castle with its beautiful view over the Rhône. Time permitting, you’ll also have the chance to visit some wine estates in the town of Tavel, famous for its rosé wines served at the courts of Philippe the Fair, Louis XIV and the Popes.
